* Other sources list Katherine Dowd Barton's birthplace as, variously, New York or Virginia. Katherine also consistently stated her birth year as 1831 but her headstone lists 1829.
** There is a really gross error in Ancestry's rendering of Josiah Downen's birth and age fields. I have submitted a correction and hope it goes through. The census taker wrote the numbers 21 for Josiah's age but did it in a sloppy fashion. I don't know if Ancestry uses OCR on this stuff or not, but in any event, the 21 was interpreted as 4 and so they decided Josiah was born in 1866 not 1849. It's actually pretty clear if you look at the image that it is 21 and not 4.
*** Mary Keeling Downen's age and year of birth were both misstated on the census, 20 years was added to her age and her birth year was erroneously stated as 1813 instead of 1833
**** Romelia Downen's last name was listed in the census as Mills not Downen. He was living with the Mills family at this time, who were not just neighbors of the Downens but also relatives. Thomas Mills was Romelia's uncle through his mother Rachel Mills Downen, and Lucretia Barton Mills was Romelia's father Timothy's first cousin.
