Opal Nelson

Opal Irene Nelson, 91, of Poulsbo [Washington State] died Dec. 18, 1999, at Martha & Mary Health Care Center in Poulsbo of breast cancer.

She was born June 9, 1908, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., to Hugh and Effie (Barton) McKinney. She grew up in Ventura County, Calif.

She married Willis Nelson on May 1, 1924, in Santa Ana, Calif. He preceded her in death in 1991.

Survivors include one son, Ronald of Port Ludlow; three grandchildren in California and four in Washington; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a son, Melvin "Gene," in 1987; one brother, Paul McKinney; and one sister, Edna (Glimpse) Varner.

At her request, there will be no services. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Audubon Society.

Additional note that was not in the original obituary: Opal was buried in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Bakersfield, Kern County, California.
