Job Downen Barton 1849-1932

Job Downen Barton was born on 28 December 1849 in Posey County, Indiana, USA, the son of William Barton and Nancy Green Duckworth Barton.

He married Elizabeth Sarah (or Sarah Elizabeth) Hancock (1852-Between 1891 and 1900) in 1868, probably in Posey County. They had the following children:

Harriet Azilee Barton (1877-1954)
Charles Wilson Barton (1884-1962)
Otis Downen Barton (1885-1963)
Effie Barton (1891-1966)

Job first showed up with his family in the 1850 census in Robinson Township, Posey County, Indiana, USA. (census image here)

As of the 1860 census, Job was still living with his father and mother in Robinson Township, Posey County, Indiana, USA. (census image here) (View neighbors in HTML)

Job married Elizabeth Hancock in 1868 and the two of them were found in the 1870 census in Robinson Township, still living with Job's father William and his stepmother Katherine Webb Gallagher Barton. (census image here) (View neighbors in html)

I have not been able to find Job and Elizabeth in the 1880 census, but as far as can be determined they were living in Ripley County, Missouri in 1880. The four children who were known to be born to them between 1877 and 1891 were all born in Missouri, and later death records specifically list the birthplace of some of the children as Ripley County.

On an unknown date between the birth of their youngest child Effie in August 1891 and the 1900 census, Elizabeth died. I don't know any more than that or where she is buried.

At the time of the 1900 census Job and his three younger children (Harriet had already married Walter Brown and was living in California) were living in Reyno, Randolph County, Arkansas, along with a boarder named Lee Williams from Tennessee. (census image here)

By 1910 Job was living with his daughter Harriet Azilee and son-in-law Walter Brown in Santa Paula, California. Job's sons Charles and Otis had also moved to Ventura County between 1900 and 1910 and were living in Fillmore, California. (census image here)

By 1920 Job and the Browns had moved to Fillmore as well, but they weren't the only ones. Job's half-brother Samuel and Sam's daughter Lourana and son-in-law Lemuel Cox had moved to Fillmore from Indiana as well, along with Sam's daughter Leora and son-in-law John Finnell. (census image here)

By 1930 Job had moved from Harriett and Walter's house to his son Charles and daughter-in-law Annette's house. I can't find Samuel and the Coxes in the 1930 census, I'm pretty sure Lemuel and Lourana didn't leave California because Lemuel died in 1946 in Ventura County and Lourana died in 1957 in central California. Job's niece Leora Finnell and her husband were still living in Fillmore, though. My suspicion is that Samuel had died by then, but maybe not. He was only five years older than Job and might have still been among the living, I just haven't been able to find him. (census image here)

Job died on 10 November 1932 in Santa Paula, California, and is buried in Bardsdale Cemetery in Fillmore, along with a number of his direct descendants as well as two of his nieces and their descendants.
