Samuel Barton 1844-After 1920

Samuel Barton was born in April 1844 in Posey County, Indiana, USA, the son of William Barton and Mary Jane Jones Barton.

He married Rachel McKinnis (1853-1884) on 20 May 1870 in Posey County. They had the following children:

Charles Barton (1871-1937)
Leora Barton (1874-1949)
Mary Eva Barton (1876-1954)
Lourana Barton (1879-1957)
Mabel Barton (1882-1929)

Samuel first showed up with his family in the 1850 census in Robinson Township, Posey County, Indiana, USA. (census image here)

As of the 1860 census, Samuel was still living with his father and stepmother in Robinson Township, Posey County, Indiana, USA. (census image here) (View neighbors in HTML)

Samuel married Rachel McKinnis in 1870 and the two of them were found in the 1870 census in Lynn Township in Posey County, along with Sam's stepbrother William Duckworth and his wife Margaret McKinnis Duckworth (Rachel and Margaret were sisters). (census image here)

At the time of the 1880 census, Samuel and Rachel were still living in Lynn Township, with all the children except for Mabel, who hadn't been born yet. Samuel's half-sister Lourania was also living with them. (census image here)

Rachel died on 20 November 1884 and is buried in the Mount Zion Cemetery in Center Township, Posey County.

I have not found any record of Samuel getting remarried. In the 1900 census he shows up in Center Township in Posey County, along with his two youngest daughters, Lourana and Mabel. Charles, Leora and Mary Eva had all gotten married and moved out. (census image here)

By 1910 Lourana had gotten married to Lemuel Cox and was living with him and their two children in Robb Township in Posey County. Samuel was apparently living with them at that point because he also showed up in the census records. (census image here)

Somewhere between 1910 and 1917 Lemuel and Lourana moved to California, and by 1920 they were in Fillmore in Ventura County. Samuel came along as well, because he and the grandchildren are all still together for the 1920 census. Sam's half-brother Job and most of his children had already moved to Ventura County and were living there at the time. (census image here)

I have not been able to find any trace of Samuel after 1920. I haven't found Lemuel and Lourana in the census after that, either, but I know they both died later in California and are buried in Bardsdale Cemetery in Fillmore, as well as Samuel's daughter Leora and her husband. I suspect Samuel is buried there as well and if I get a chance to get out there and look for him I will report back whatever I find.
