William Bradford Barton 1813 - 1892

William Barton was born in Kentucky, USA on 14 August 1813. He was the son of Samuel Barton (1788-1839) and Jane Downen Barton (ca. 1792-ca. 1821).

He married Mary Jane Jones (1822-ca. 1845) on 19 November 1837 in Posey County, Indiana, USA. They had the following children:

Louisa Barton (ca. 1840-After 1870)
Wilson G. Barton (ca. 1841-1886)
Samuel Barton (1844-After 1920)

Mary Jones Barton died ca. 1845 in Posey County. William remarried, this time to Nancy Green Duckworth (1828-1864) on 2 March 1848 in Posey County. They had the following children:

Job Downen Barton (1849-1932)
Mary Magdalene Barton (1851-1925)
Elizabeth Barton (1857-1948)
Lourania Barton (1860-1927)
Anson Barton (1861-1914)
Otis Barton(1864-1949)

William's last marriage was to Katherine Dowd Gallagher Davis Webb (1829-1915) on 26 January 1865. No children are known to have been born to this marriage.

I have looked at the 1840 census records for William in Robinson Township of Posey County. The 1840 census is (obviously) harder to sort out because it only lists the head of household and everyone else is grouped by age and gender. William was the only male in the household and the only person over 20. It looks as if Mary Jane was the only female between 15 and 20. There is another unnamed female between 10 and 14 (perhaps a sister of William's or of Mary Jane's), and a girl under 5, who must be Louisa. (census image here)

William and his second wife Nancy Green Barton first show up in the 1850 census in Robinson Township. At that time they had Louisa, Samuel and Wilson living with them from his first marriage, her son William Duckworth from her first marriage, their son Job, and William's brother Job as well. As of the 1860 census, William and Nancy were still living in Robinson Township, Posey County, Indiana, USA. William's daughter Louisa was gone, married to Martin Warthen. Wilson, Samuel, son Job, and William Duckworth were still there, along with new additions Mary and Elizabeth. As well, two of William's cousin Lucretia's sons were temporarily staying with them, Virgil and Fielden Mills (although they were erroneously referred to as Bartons in the census). Nancy died on 21 September 1864 and was buried in Kissick/Downen Cemetery in Posey County. William remarried the following year, to Katherine Webb Gallagher.

William and Katherine didn't move, so the 1870 census found them in the same place in Posey County. Wilson had married Nancy Aldridge Venable and moved out, Samuel had moved in with his stepbrother William Duckworth, who had moved out and married Margaret McKinnis. Mary had gotten married to James Breeze. It looks as if Job got married as well, to Elizabeth Hancock, and she is the E. Sarah listed in the census. I had originally thought William and Nancy's daughter Elizabeth was still at home and was missed by the census but I subsequently found her living with another family in the same census, working as a domestic servant. Lourania, Anson and Otis are all still at home. In addition, Katherine's son Marimon Davis from one of her prior marriages was living there. All in all, it must have been quite a busy household. As of the 1880 census, William and Katherine were still in Robinson Township, but they were down to two children, Anson and Otis. Job and his wife Elizabeth had moved out, Lourania had moved in with her brother Samuel who had married Rachel McKinnis (Lourania later married George W. Oliver). I don't know where daughter Elizabeth went; I know as of the 1900 census she was living with her brother Anson and his wife Sophia Blackburn. (census image here)

William died on 15 July 1892 and was buried in Kissick/Downen Cemetery next to his second wife Nancy (I have not been able to locate where his first wife Mary Jones Barton is buried). Katherine died on 27 July 1915 and is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery along with her son from her first marriage, Thomas Gallagher.
