Thomas Culley 1785-1849
Thomas Culley was born in 1785 in Carteret County, North Carolina, the son of Thomas Tupper Culley (1743-1802) and Lucretia (maiden name unknown) (1746-1802).
Thomas married Elizabeth Canaday (1787-1865) on 13 July 1804 in Carteret County. They had the following children:
Elizabeth Culley (1808-1831)
Lucretia Culley (1805-1845)
Jane Culley (1818-1850)
I have not had much luck finding Thomas in the census records after the 1800 census, where he was still at home with his family in Carteret County, North Carolina. It is believed that his oldest daughter Elizabeth, who was born around 1808, was born in North Carolina. The next daughter, Lucretia, who should not have been more than a year or two younger than Elizabeth, was born in Tennessee, possibly in Sumner County. Thomas and Elizabeth's youngest daughter Jane, who was born about 1818, is also believed to have been born in Tennessee.
Thomas and his family must have moved to Posey County, Indiana, by 1825, because that was the year that Elizabeth married Alfred Barton and Lucretia married George Tillman Downen (1805-1880); both marriages took place in Posey County. Jane also married in Posey County; in 1834 she married James Downen (1812-1880) there.
I didn't know if Thomas had owned land in Posey County before this, but the land office records show that in 1837 he purchased 40 acres there in section 27 of Township section 6S R13W. According to the book Family Maps of Posey County from Arphax Publishing, this is in Black Township roughly between Farmersville and Bufkin. The Family Maps book also shows that Thomas owned another 40 acres directly to the south of the 1837 purchase that it indicates were purchased in 1835. (1837 Land purchase record image here)
Thomas died on 26 February 1849 in Posey County. Elizabeth lived until 1865 when she is believed to have died in Posey County. I have been unable to locate the burial places of either of them.
