Julia Anna (or Anna Julia) Downen 1860-(1880-1883)
Julia Downen Utley
Julia Utley

Julia Downen was born around March 1860 in Posey County, Indiana, USA, the daughter of William Downen and Rutha Maria Gwaltney Downen.

She married John Henry Utley on 10 May 1877 in Posey County. They had the following child:

Emma Utley (1878-1941)

Julia first showed up with her family in the 1860 census in Robinson Township, Posey County, Indiana, USA. (census image here)

Julia showed up again in the 1870 census in Robinson Township. (census image here) (View neighbors in HTML)

In 1877 Julia married John Utley and the couple and their daughter Emma showed up in the 1880 census in Marrs Township of Posey County. (census image here)

I can only surmise what happened next. Julia dropped out of the historical record after the 1880 census. John married her sister Elizabeth in 1883 or 1884 (the 1900 census indicates they were married 16 years at that time, but their oldest son was born in April 1884, which is cutting it a little close). John and Elizabeth were apparently married in Posey County but their oldest son's birthplace was listed as Illinois, indicating they moved around the time of the marriage or shortly thereafter to Gallatin County, Illinois.

I have not found Julia listed in the Indiana death records or in the Posey County burial indexes I have access to. If she and John had moved to Illinois before her death there are no online death indexes that cover Gallatin County as early as the 1880s. So the place of her death is unclear, but I believe she died between the time of the 1880 census and 1883, though I have no way to prove that. Her daughter Emma married Sherman Carroll in 1895 and had at least 10 children, I hope one of Julia's descendants who might have knowledge of her fate will come forward at some point and set the record straight.
