Felix Mills 1857 - 1915

Felix was the son of Thomas Mills (1825-1908) and Lucretia Barton Mills (1828-1910). He was born 25 October 1857 in Posey County, Indiana, USA.

We first see Felix in the 1860 census in Robinson Township in Posey County.(census image here) (View neighbors in HTML)

As of the 1870 census, Felix and most of his family were still living in Robinson Township. (census image here) (View neighbors in html)

Felix married Julia Buchanan in Posey County in 1878. They had the following child:

Lawrence Mills (1879-1894)

I don't know the particulars of what happened to the marriage, but it seems to have ended in divorce. By the 1880 census, Felix and his son Lawrence are back at home with Felix's parents in Robinson Township, and Julia shows up back at home with her parents in Black Township in Posey County. She remarried the next year, to John Milton Dixon. (View census image with Felix and Lawrence) (View neighbors in HTML)

Felix remarried too, this time to Fannie Emeline Pool, on 6 July 1884 in Posey County. They had the following children:

John Elvis Mills (1886-1932)
Elza Mills (1887-1969)
Carson Mills (1889-1938)

Tragedy struck on 17 February 1890, when Fannie died in Robinson Township at the age of 27 or 28. According to Carroll Cox's Posey County Cemetery Records 1814-1979 she was buried in Old Beech Cemetery in Posey County, but as of 2009 there was no visible headstone for her in the cemetery.

Felix remarried again, this time to Sarah Ann Murphy, on 1 March 1893. I have not been able to find this marriage in the Indiana or the Illinois marriage records, but I suspect it happened in Illinois. The following children were born to this marriage:

Essie Mills (1899-1899)
Iona Mills (1900-1975)
Isaac Mills (1902-1981)

Tragedy struck again just over a year after Felix and Sarah's marriage, Felix's son Lawrence from his first wife Julia died on 31 July 1894. I suspect he died in Gallatin County, Illinois, but have found no other record of his death or where he is buried.

Felix and Sarah's daughter Essie was either stillborn or died in early infancy, but their daughter Iona showed up in the 1900 census in Asbury Township in Gallatin County, along with her parents, her half-brothers Elvis and Carson, and a 15 year old girl named Hattie McGhee who is listed as a servant. Felix and Sarah also appear in the 1910 census in Asbury Township. By this time all of Felix's children with Fannie were gone, so the household was just the two of them, their children Iona and Isaac, and Felix's first cousin once removed George Riley Downen, who is listed in the census as a hired hand. Felix died on 19 January 1915 in Omaha, Illinois (it's not clear if this was the village of Omaha or Omaha Township) and was buried in Old Cottonwood Cemetery, Cottonwood, Asbury Township, near Felix's parents Thomas and Lucretia. Sarah did not join him in death until 1952, when she passed away in St. Louis and was subsequently buried next to him.
