John Mills 1849 - 1928
John was the son of Thomas Mills (1825-1908) and Lucretia Barton Mills (1828-1910). He was born 19 January 1849 in Posey County, Indiana, USA.

We next see John in the 1860 census, still in Robinson Township, this time with three siblings joining him and his parents.(census image here) (View neighbors in HTML)
On 23 March 1869 John married Mary E. Trafford, but their union was to be tragically short lived. She died on 9 November of the same year at the age of 23.
I have been unable to find John in the 1870 census, but other records show that he married Mary J. Pruitt (1847 - 1923) on 15 January 1871. The two had the following children:
Alvah Mills (1872 - 1944)
Leander Mills (1875 - 1947)
Edgar Mills (1881 - 1961)
Apparently John and Mary moved to Gallatin County, Illinois, shortly after their marriage, because it looks like all three boys were born in Illinois. We next find the family (minus Edgar, who has not been born yet) in New Haven Township, Gallatin County, in the 1880 census. (census image here)
Edgar was the only son not to show up in the 1880 census, but in the 1900 census he is the only one still listed with his parents, after a stint as an under-age soldier in the Spanish American War. At this time John and Mary were living in Omaha Township in Gallatin County. (census image here)
Between 1900 and 1920 John and Mary moved to White County, Illinois, where they are found at Indian Creek Township in the 1920 census. The names just before theirs on the census are their son Lee, his wife Grace, and their grandson Glenn Fielden Mills. (census image here)
Mary died in 1923 and John almost five years later, on 8 March 1928 in Norris City, White County, Illinois. He and Mary are buried at the Old Cottonwood Cemetery, Cottonwood, Asbury Township, Gallatin County, Illinois, USA, near John's parents Thomas and Lucretia.
