Joseph F. Mills 1866 - 1951

Joseph Mills was the son of Thomas Mills (1825-1908) and Lucretia Barton Mills (1828-1910). He was born on 10 October 1866 in Posey County, Indiana, USA.

Joseph married Bertha Allyn (1869-1936) in Posey County on 16 March 1890. They had the following child:

Ethel Mills (1891-1978)

Joseph first showed up in the census in 1870 in Robinson Township in Posey County. (census image here) (View neighbors in html)

As of the 1880 census, Joseph and his parents showed up once more in Robinson Township. His older siblings Felix, Allen, and Rachel were still living at home, the siblings older than those three had all gotten married and moved out. His younger brothers Lawrence and Lee were still there as well, along with nephew Lawrence (Felix's son) who was about a year old at that time. (census image here) (View neighbors in HTML)

Joseph married Bertha Allyn in 1890 and by 1900 he and Bertha and their daughter Ethel were living in Lynn Township of Posey County. I noticed looking at the census records that they showed up on the page immediately below Joseph's brother Fielden and his wife. (census image here)

In 1910 Joseph and Bertha and Ethel were still in Lynn Township. Oddly enough, Fielden appeared in the census below them this time, not above, but still on the same page. (census image here)

By 1920 Joseph's brother Fielden and his wife were no longer neighbors, they had moved out of the countryside into Mount Vernon, the county seat of Posey County. Joseph and Bertha and Ethel were still in Lynn Township. (census image here)

Ethel married Henry Stein in 1925 and was gone by the time of the 1930 census (gone, but not far -- Ethel and her husband Henry were the next family in the census below Joseph and Bertha). Brother Fielden died in 1920 just a few months after the census was taken, and his wife Mariah died in 1922. The rest of Joseph's siblings had moved to Gallatin County, Illinois, although three of his other older brothers and one sister had died by now. (census image here)

1930 would be the last census Joseph and Bertha would appear together in. Bertha died in 1936 and was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Joseph lived another 15 years, finally dying at the age of 85 in Mount Vernon. His two younger brothers were the only siblings to outlive him out of his immediate family, although Joseph's daughter Ethel lived until 1978. Joseph is buried in Mount Pleasant next to Bertha.
