Cemetery Notes	Florence National Cemetery began as a cemetery for Union POWs who died at the nearby Florence Stockade in late 1864 and early 1865. Around 2,322 sets of remains were buried in mass graves initially, and another 416 sets of remains were moved from another nearby burial ground and reinterred later, also in a mass grave. Out of these 2,738 bodies only five people were subsequently identified, with the rest being unidentified as of 2019. 2,167 small marble markers denoting the location of the original set of unknown graves were placed after 1865, but in 1955 these were replaced with 32 larger markers at each end of the 16 original trenches. There are records of soldiers who were imprisoned at the Florence Stockade and never released, it can safely be assumed that most of these people are buried in one of the sets of mass graves at the current Florence National Cemetery.
