Alanson Harrison Allyn 1829 - 1890

Alanson was the son of Abijah Allyn (1794-1874) and Catherine Hooper Allyn (1799-1853). He was born on 22 February 1829 in Posey County, Indiana, USA.

Alanson married Mary Chalier (1838-1918) in Posey County on 17 April 1856. They had the following children:

Josephine Allyn (1857-(1926-1962))
Mittilder Allyn (1858-1950)
Anson Allyn (1860-1916)
Taphenas Allyn (1861-1955)
Emanuel Edmond Allyn (1864-1936)
Cora Allyn (1866-1946)
Burtis Allyn (1868-1868)
Bertha Allyn (1869-1936)
Estella "Stella" Allyn (1872-1947)
Ezbon Allyn (1874-1965)
Alison Allyn (1882-1883)

The first census that Alanson showed up under his own name in was far from the place of his birth, in 1850 in the vicinity of Placerville, El Dorado County, California. The California Gold Rush had broken out the year before and Alanson's occupatin was listed as "miner", like most of the men on that page of the census. On the line immediately aboe his there is listed a Francis Allyn who was 47 at the time of the census. I have to think this is Alanson's uncle, but the mystery here is that Alanson's uncle Francis showed up in the same census back in Posey County. So I don't know what the story is, I have seen other cases of people being double counted in the census before but if that is what happened here it takes the cake for the longest separation between places (remember, this was almost 20 years before the railroad was connected between the rest of the country and California and the journey from the midwest to the west coast was a long, hard and dangerous trip). Maybe this is not Alanson's uncle, maybe he is another relative who happened to have the same name, year of birth and place of birth. (census image here)

At some point in time between 1850 and 1856 Alanson returned home to Posey County and married Mary Chalier as noted above. The couple showed up in the 1860 census in Black Township of Posey County, along with their two oldest daughters, Josephine and Mittilder, and a 19 year old boy named Marion Bradley whose occupation was listed as a laborer. The 1870 census found the family still in Black Township. In addition to Josephine and Mittilder, Anson, Emanuel and Cora had joined the crowd. I don't know where Taphenas was, if she was just missed by the census or if she was staying with other family members. A 15 year old farm hand named George Thompson was also living with the family. Just below Alanson's family on the census, the next household listed was Alanson's father Abijah and his younger brother Otis. (census image here)

In the 1880 census Taphenas finally showed up, along with Anson, Emanuel, Cora and Bertha. Josephine married Walter Caborn in 1875 and was living with him and their daughter Grace in Marrs Township of Posey County. Mittilder married Virgil Mills in 1878 and was living with him in Gallatin County, Illinois. Daughter Estella and son Ezbon had also joined the family since the last census. Mary's mother Mittilder Chalier was also living with the family; apparently Mary's father had died by then. The family was split onto two different census pages. Alanson died on 10 May 1890 in Posey County and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Bufkin Cemetery in Posey County. Mary died in 1918 and is buried in the same cemetery.
