Alfred Barton ca. 1804 - 1833

Alfred Barton was born in Randolph County, North Carolina, USA, ca. 1804. He was the son of William Barton (1763-1832) and Ruth Underwood Barton (ca. 1764-ca. 1836).

He married Elizabeth Culley (1808-1831) on 11 February 1825 in Posey County, Indiana. They had the following children:

John Barton (1826-1904)
Jane Barton (1827-1909)
Lucretia Barton (1828-1910)
Elizabeth Barton (1831-After 1850)

After Elizabeth Culley's death he married Polly Dixon on 19 July 1832. No children are known to have been born to this marriage.

Alfred wouldn't have shown up by name in this census, but his presence can be inferred from the 1810 cenus in Randolph County, North Carolina. There is a discrepancy in this census, howerver, since it only shows two males under the age of 10 instead of three. Alfred, his brother William, and his brother Robert should all show up, but at least one of them was not counted. (census image here).

By 1820 the family had moved to Posey County, Indiana. We see the same discrepancy in the younger boys going on, either William or Alfred was listed by the census, but not both, as only one male child between the ages of 16 and 18 was counted in the census. (census image here).

I can't find Alfred or his younger brother Robert listed in the 1830 census. I have found his brothers Alexander, Samuel, Daniel and William in Posey County, and Willis back in Randolph County North Carolina. Alfred's father William is also listed but by this time only two people are listed in the household, William and presumably his wife Ruth. I have run through the census records that list Alfred's brothers but can't find a person of the right age and gender to match up with Alfred. I have not been able to find his wife Elizabeth's family in the census for this time period, so I can't tell if the couple was living with her parents either. For the time being their whereabouts in 1830 will remain a mystery.

Elizabeth died in 1831 and Alfred remarried the next year, to Polly Dixon. I have not found evidence of any children from this marriage. Alfred died the next year, on 24 August 1833, in Posey County. I have not been able to find his burial place, which is not surprising given the year. There are not a lot of burials documented in Posey County before about 1850.

Alfred's second wife Polly remarried in 1835, to Joseph McKinney. She had at least one daughter with him but Polly died in 1846.

Perhaps surprisingly, at least three of Alfred's four children lived to ripe old ages even though neither one of their parents reached the age of 30. John lived into his late 70s and Jane and Lucretia both lived into their early 80s. Elizabeth is the only child I have not been able to confirm a good lifespan for, I have not found any evidence of her after the 1850 census when she was 18 or 19 years old.
