Elizabeth Barton 1857-1948

Elizabeth Barton was born on 4 April 1857 in Posey County, Indiana, USA, the son of William Barton and Nancy Green Duckworth Barton.

Elizabeth apparently never married but moved out of her parents' household at a young age; I can only speculate on what kind of relationship she had with some of the different people she is found in the census with in different years.

Elizabeth first showed up with her family in the 1860 census in Robinson Township, Posey County, Indiana, USA. (census image here) (View neighbors in HTML)

Elizabeth next appears in the 1870 census in Lynn Township in Posey County. At this time she is living with a married couple named Edmond (?) and Elizabeth Bacon and their infant son George, as well as a 25 year old from Tennessee named Lewis Collins. Elizabeth Barton was listed as a domestic servant. I had originally thought that Elizabeth was still living at home with her parents at that time and that she had been missed in the census but that was before I found this census record. At the time of the 1880 census, Elizabeth is still living with Lizzie Bacon, but Lizzie's husband is gone and the two of them are living with Lizzie's father Anson Osborn and Lizzie's brother Lemuel (in Black Township in Posey County), as well as a John Barton who might be a relative of Elizabeth's. I'm not sure about John, though, since I've found no trace of him in the Posey County census records before this one. The census does not list Elizabeth Barton's relationship to Anson but her occupation is listed as housekeeper, so she is still doing what she was doing a decade earlier. (census image here)

By 1900 Elizabeth was back in Robinson Township with family, but the family was her brother Anson and his wife and children. (census image here)

I can't find Elizabeth in the 1910 census records, I don't know if her name is just hopelessly garbled or she managed to avoid the net of the census that year.

In 1920 Elizabeth showed up in Center Township in Posey County. She was living with a Bessie Barton who was listed as her niece. I believe Bessie is actually Bessie Cox, who was the daughter of Elizabeth's brother Wilson's widow, Sarah Moore Barton Cox. I don't know what happened to Bessie's biological father, John Cox, but by the 1910 census Bessie was apparently going by the surname Barton. In any event, it would make sense that Elizabeth would list her as a niece since that's how she would have been treated, even if she was not a biological "niece". (census image here)

By the 1930 census Elizabeth (still in Center Township) was finally living alone. Apparently this didn't have any particularly ill effect on her, since she lived another 18 years. Her brother's widow Sarah Moore Barton Cox was still living nearby, close enough to show up on the same census page with Elizabeth. (census image here)

Her neighbor Sarah died in 1934 but Elizabeth didn't die until 19 January 1948 in Wadesville, Indiana, at the age of 91. She is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Mount Vernon in Posey County.
