Samuel Barton ca. 1788 - 1839
Samuel Barton was born in Randolph County, North Carolina, USA, ca. 1788. He was the son of William Barton (1763-1832) and Ruth Underwood Barton (ca. 1764-ca. 1836).
He married Jane Downen on 1 June 1810 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. They had the following children:
William Bradford Barton (1813-1892)
Narcissa Barton (ca. 1816-After 1880)
James B. Barton (ca. 1817-(1855-1870))
Mary Barton (1819-1896)
Job Barton (ca. 1821-(1880-1900))
After Jane Downen's death Samuel married Mary McMahon (ca. 1795-1841). They had the following children:
Lee Barton (1824-1904)
Ira McClinton Barton (1827-1861)
John Barton (ca. 1827-After 1850)
Jane Barton (1828-1866)
Johnson Barton (1831-1864)
Samuel Barton (1836-Unknown)
Samuel can first be identified by name in the 1810 census in Christian County, Kentucky. At that time the only people in the household appear to be his wife Jane and Samuel himself. (census image here)
By the time of the 1820 census Samuel and his family had moved to Posey County, Indiana. The census picture here is a lot more complicated, Samuel was listed by name (as per the custom of the census records of that time) but everyone else in the household was only identified by age, gender and color. The other thing that I find confusing is that the census itself lists that it was taken in Smith Township but Ancestry.com identifies it as being in Marrs Township in Posey County. It is possible there was a redrawing of the township boundaries but I have not pursued this to find out exactly what was going on. The numbers almost make sense but one of the two boys is missing, there is no way to tell if it is William or James. It is possible one of the two boys is staying with some other relatives or neighbors for some reason, but there's no way to tell from the census. But what we see in the census corresponds as it should for Samuel, Jane, Narcissa and Mary. (census image here)
Jane died after 1820 and Samuel married Mary McMahon. The 1830 census finds them in Robinson Township of Posey County. An analysis of the census reveals all is in order except for two discrepancies. If James is being listed his age is being overstated by at least two years, and there is an unknown girl less than five years old in addition to Jane. If she is in fact a daughter of Samuel's and Mary's and not a neighbor or relative's child, there is another daughter whose name has been lost. (census image here)
Two more sons were born after this census, Johnson and Samuel Jr.
Samuel died on 23 December 1839 in Posey County. I have been unable to determine his burial place, although it wouldn't surprise me if he were planted somewhere on his own property in the county, of which he had substantial holdings. His wife Mary died about a year and a half after him, in 1841. I have been unable to determine where she is buried but I'm sure it's next to Samuel, wherever it is.
Because Mary was the head of household after Samuel's death she is actually listed by name in the 1840 census. I will look at that census as I work my way through the other children to see what could be determined about their situation in the year immediately following Samuel's death.
