William Barton 1763 - 1832
William Barton was born in Randolph County, North Carolina in 1763. He was the son of John Barton (1737-1801) and Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) (1741-1817).
He married Ruth Underwood (1764-1836) in 1784 in Randolph County. They had the following children:

I have not been able to locate William before the 1800 census, but he did show up in 1800 in Randolph County, in what was listed as Hillsboro Township. I have been unable to locate this place name in present day Randolph County. There is a city of Hillsborough in Orange County, North Carolina, which is not far from Randolph County, but I can't see how these could be the same place. (census image here)
1810 found William and his family still in Randolph County, but this time there is no reference to a township name. I have a theory that the Hillsboro in Randolph County and the Hillsborough in Orange County were too close together and this was already causing confusion, so perhaps the place name in Randolph County was already in the process of being renamed or phased out. William and his family moved to Posey County, Indiana, between 1810 and 1820. (census image here)
William showed up in the census the last time in 1830, in Robinson Township of Posey County. (census image here)
William died on 13 April 1832 in Posey County. The record of his burial place has not survived.
