William Barton 1803 - 1839

William Barton was born on 26 January 1803 in Randolph County, North Carolina, USA. He was the son of William Barton (1763-1832) and Ruth Underwood Barton (ca. 1764-ca. 1836).

He married Cynthia Downen (ca. 1805-1839) on 15 January 1824 in Posey County, Indiana. They had the following children:

Willis Barton (1821-Unknown)
Elizabeth Barton (1825-1856)
Jane Barton (1828-1897)
Cynthia Barton (1835-1884)

The only census I have found that shows William by name is the 1830 census in Marrs Township of Posey County. There are a couple of things that lead me to believe this is the correct record for William. His older brother Alexander shows up on the same census page, and his father William showed up in the 1830 census in Robinson Township, just to the north of Marrs Township. (census image here)

I don't know what became of William's son Willis, there are no male children listed in the 1830 census record I found. If that is in fact the correct census record then Willis was either not at home when that census was taken, or had already died. William and Cynthia did not live to see any of their daughters married, either; the eldest daughter Elizabeth was the first to get married but that wasn't until 1843, four years after William and Cynthia's deaths.

I don't know any of the particulars of William and Cynthia's passing other than both are believed to have died in Posey County in 1839. All three of their daughters were still alive and were married between 1843 and 1852, I have no idea how they were provided for or where they were living after the deaths of their parents, although it was probably in Posey County since that was where all three of the girls either got married or were later found in the census records.

I don't know where William and Cynthia are buried. Some sources believe William was buried in the place of his birth in Randolph County, North Carolina, but I find that more than a bit unlikely, unless he was back there on family business and took ill, which is of course possible. In any event, I have found no specific records of any kind on his place of burial. The couple's daughters spent most of the rest of their lives in Posey County and all three are buried there.
