Sophia Barton

Sophia Blackburn was born on 24 August 1865 in Posey County, Indiana, USA, the daughter of William Jackson Blackburn (1837-1915) and Charlotte Duckworth (1846-1930).

She married Anson Barton (1861-1914) on 18 September 1884 in Vanderburgh County, Indiana. They had the following children:

Walter Elbert Barton (1886-1983)
Eathel Barton (1889-1926)
Nora Barton (1890-1980)
Grace Barton (1893-1979)

Sophia first showed up with her family in Black Township of Posey County in the 1870 census. (census image here)

As of the 1880 census, Sophia and her family were still in Black Township. (census image here)

Sophia married Anson Barton in 1884 and the two of them were found in the 1900 census in Robinson Township of Posey County. All four of the kids were there along with Anson's sister Elizabeth. (census image here)

1910 found the family still living in Robinson Township, although a bit smaller. Walter wasn't at home but I don't know where he was in 1910, he went on to marry Martha Browning in 1917 and the couple lived in Evansville for some time after that. Anson's sister Elizabeth had also moved out. (census image here)

Anson died in Robinson Township in 1914 and was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Mount Vernon in Posey County.

In the 1920 census Sophia was found with her daughter Eathel and son-in-law Emery Hanes, still in Robinson Township. (census image here)

Eathel died in 1926 leaving behind three grandsons for Sophia and her son-in-law Emery to take care of. The five of them were found in the 1930 census in Center Township, Posey County. Interestingly enough, Sophia is listed as the head of household and Emery was listed as son-in-law. I don't know if Sophia had a commanding presence or just really was the matriarch. (census image here)

Sophia died on 28 November 1952 in Posey County and is buried next to Anson in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

I find somewhat noteworthy the longevity of Sophia and Anson's children; only Eathel died at a young age (at 36). Her three siblings, like their mother Sophia (who died at age 87), had quite long lifespans, living respectively to 96 (Walter), 90 (Nora), and 86 (Grace) years old. It would be interesting to look at Sophia and Anson's grandchildren as well to see if that longevity persisted more than a generation.
