James Breeze 1847-1926

James Winifred Breeze was born on 11 June 1847 in Mount Vernon, Posey County, Indiana, USA, the son of Covington Breeze (ca. 1810-1895) and Louise Lucinda Chamberlain Breeze (ca. 1822-ca. 1862).

He married Mary Barton on 18 February 1869 in Posey County. They had the following children:

John Breeze (1870-1938)
Covington Breeze (1873-1952)
Cora Breeze (1877-1955)
Etna Breeze (1879-1966)
Ethel Breeze (1880-1929)
Simeon Breeze (1882-1973)
Robert Breeze (1884-1967)
Mary Breeze (1886-1971)

James first showed up with his family in the 1860 census in Black Township, Posey County, Indiana, USA (His family should be in the 1850 census as well but I have been unable to locate them). (census image here)

James enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War, being mustered in as a private in the 136th Indiana Infantry Regiment on 21 May 1864. The records are contradictory on which company he served in, some indicate Company G, some indicate Company H. His tombstone indicates Company H. The 136th only existed for 100 days, and was mustered out in Indianapolis on 2 September 1864. It doesn't look as if the 136th ever saw combat, but it did lose 8 soldiers to disease during the three months of its existence.

James married Mary Barton in 1869 and the two of them were found in the 1870 census in Black Township. (census image here)

Between the 1870 census and 1880, John, Covington, Cora and Etna were all born, and show up in the 1880 census. (census image here)

By the time of the 1900 census, Ethel, Simeon, Robert and Mary had all been born, but Ethel was already gone, having married Bertis Blackburn in 1897. John married Crulia Buchanan in 1891, and Covington married Eva Erwin in 1892. In the good news, bad news department, Cora had married George Bowers in 1895 but was back with her family in 1900 and her status was listed as widowed. Likewise for Etna, she had married William Buchanan in 1896 and had a daughter named Charlotte or Lottie, but she is also back at home and listed as divorced. (census image here)

1910 found the family still living in Black Township, although somewhat smaller. Etna and granddaughter Lottie were still living there, as was Cora, although she now had the surname Murphy (I'm still looking for her husband, I'm not finding them in the marriage records). At least this time Cora is listed as divorced, not widowed, for what that's worth. The rest of the children are gone. Simeon married Anna Blackburn in 1905, Robert married Kate Sweeney in 1904, and Mary married John Bailey in 1902. (census image here)

In 1920 Cora was gone but Etna and Lottie were still living with James and Mary. I found census records that indicated Cora moved to St. Louis, I wasn't sure if she was the right person or not but James's obituary confirmed that Cora was indeed living in St. Louis. (census image here)

Mary died in May 1925 in Posey County and James died within a year of her on 2 February 1926. Both are buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Posey County.
