Elizabeth Culley 1808-1831
Elizabeth Culley Barton
Elizabeth Barton

Elizabeth Culley was born in 1808 in North Carolina, the daughter of Thomas Culley (1785-1849) and Elizabeth Canaday (1787-1865).

She married Alfred Barton on 11 February 1825 in Posey County, Indiana. They had the following children:

John Barton (1826-1904)
Jane Barton (1827-1909)
Lucretia Barton (1828-1910)
Elizabeth Barton (1831-After 1850)

Elizabeth, of course, would not have been listed by name in the 1830 census, even if her husband Alfred showed up, but I have been unable to locate him either in that census. I have found Alfred's brothers Alexander, Samuel, Daniel and William in Posey County, and Willis in Randolph County North Carolina. Alfred's father William is also listed but by this time only two people are listed in the household, William and presumably his wife Ruth. I have run through the census records that list Alfred's brothers but can't find a person of the right age and gender to match up with Alfred. I have not been able to find Elizabeth's family in the census for this time period either, so I can't tell if the couple was living with her parents either. For the time being Elizabeth and Alfred's whereabouts in 1830 will remain a mystery.

Elizabeth died in 1831 in Posey County. Her husband Alfred remarried the next year, to Polly Dixon. Alfred died a year later, in 1833. I don't know if Polly ended up raising the Barton children or if they ended up with one set of the grandparents. Alfred's parents died in 1832 and 1836, but Elizabeth's father lived until 1849 and her mother until 1865 so the Culleys may have ended up raising their grandchildren.

I have not been able to find the burial places for Elizabeth or for Alfred, but it would not surprise me if they were buried in a corner of one of the family farms somewhere in Posey County.

Perhaps surprisingly, at least three of Alfred and Elizabeth's four children lived to ripe old ages even though neither one of their parents reached the age of 30. John lived into his late 70s and Jane and Lucretia both lived into their early 80s. Elizabeth is the only child I have not been able to confirm a good lifespan for, I have not found any evidence of her after the 1850 census when she was 18 or 19 years old.
