Marimon Davis 1857 - 1928

Marimon Davis was born on 4 April 1857 in Posey County, Indiana, USA. He was the son of John R. Davis (1831-After 1856) and Katherine Dowd Gallagher Davis (1829-1915).

He married Hariet Moore (1856-1952) on 17 March 1875 in Posey County. They had the following children:

Wilson Davis (1876-1883)
Thomas Davis (1877-1912)
William Oscar Davis (1881-Before 1900)
Emma Frances Davis (1885-1956)
Orville Davis (1887-Before 1900)
James Davis (1888-After 1928)
Elmer Davis (1890-1961)
Maude Grace Davis (1894-1995)
Nora Pearl Davis (1895-1918)
Ethel Davis (1897-1954)

Marimon first appeared in the 1860 census with his mother Katherine in Marrs Township in Posey County, Indiana. Marimon and Katherine were both listed under the name of her most recent husband, Richard Webb, but there was no trace of Richard. All further records of Marimon listed him with his biological father's surname, Davis. (census image here)

After his mother Katherine's marriage to William Barton in 1865, Marimon was found with the Barton family in the 1870 census in Robinson Township in Posey County. (census image here) (View neighbors in html)

In 1875 Marimon married Hariet Moore and apparently after that the couple moved to Gallatin County, Illinois, where the first of their children were born. As of the 1880 census their two year old son Thomas showed up with them. (census image here)

By 1885 the family had moved to Kingman County in Kansas, where they lived in Galesburg Township and showed up there in the Kansas State Census. William had been born, but apparently before the move to Kansas, since his birthplace is listed as Illinois. (census image here)

The next time the family showed up in the census was 1900 in Edmond in the Oklahoma Territory. The remaining six children had been born, the only one who didn't show up in the census was William, who appears to have passed away by then. In addition, the questions that Hariet answered about her total number of children vs. the number of living children indicate that she had another five children in addition to William who had been born but died. At this time I only have the names of Wilson and Orville out of the five, so there must be another three children who were either stillborn or died young that I do not know the names of. (census image here)

A couple of changes showed up in the 1910 census, the family was now in Oklahoma City, and Emma was back in Posey County with her grandmother Katherine. The choice of phrasing may be poor; since Emma was born in Kansas, "back in Posey County" may be completely wrong for her situation. (census image here)

By 1920 Emma was in Oklahoma again, but she had married James Franklin Hardin and was starting her own family. Sadly, Marimon and Hariet's oldest son Thomas had died in 1912. Just as sadly, after their daughter Nora had married Clydee Slane and had a daughter Letha, Nora died in 1918. Letha ended up living with her grandparents, at least until 1920. Son James was still living at home, but Elmer, Maude and Ethel were all gone. Elmer married Carolyn Conley, I don't know if they were still in Oklahoma at that time but eventually he moved to Louisiana. Maude had married LeRoy Elder and Ethel married Lloyd Alexander; both Maude and Ethel stayed in Oklahoma City and raised their families there. (census image here)

Marimon died on 4 August 1928 in Oklahoma City and was buried in Sunny Lane Cemetery.

After Marimon's death Hariet moved in with Emma and her son-in-law James Hardin, that is where she showed up in the 1930 census. Hariet lived until 1952, no doubt keeping busy with lots of grandchildren. She is buried next to Marimon in Sunny Lane Cemetery.

On a kind of a spooky note, as I was writing this page on Marimon and his family, I received an email from a Find A Grave contributor named Emily Jordan. She has posted a picture on Find A Grave of Marimon and Hariet's headstone, and today emailed me two entries that were published in 1928 by the Oklahoma City Oklahoman newspaper:

Funeral services for Marimon Davis, 71 years old, who died Saturday, will be conducted from Garrison's chapel at 10 o'clock Monday morning by Rev. T.G. Netherton. Burial in Sunny Lane cemetery.

I guess it's time to cue the Twilight Zone music ... I have not had any contact with Emily before this, the timing of this is just too exquisite. I guess this page was meant to be, it was meant to be written today, and it was meant to have this obituary information added to it.
