Polly Dixon was born on 16 February 1810, probably in North Carolina. She was the daughter of James Dixon (1761-1828) and Hannah Downen (1770-1820).
Polly married Alfred Barton (1804-1833) on 19 July 1832, probably in Posey County, Indiana. No children are known to have been born to this marriage.
After Alfred's death in 1833 Polly married Joseph McKinney (ca. 1810-After 1845). They had at least one child together:
Mary Ann McKinney (1846-Unknown)
I have not been able to locate Polly's family in the census records so I have been unable to ascertain her whereabouts early in life. Her father was born in North Carolina and her mother in South Carolina and the two were supposedly married in Christian County, Kentucky. Some sources believe Polly was born in Indiana but this seems a bit early for her to have been born in Posey County, and all of her older brothers (even the one born a year or two before her) were born in North Carolina.
After her first hsuband Alfred's death I don't know if she ended up raising any of his children from his first wife Elizabeth Culley or not. I have not been able to locate her second husband Joseph McKinney in the census records either.
Polly died in childbirth while giving birth to her daughter Mary Ann on 14 August 1846 in Posey County. I have not been able to locate her burial site but her father and some of her brothers are buried in Dixon Cemetery in Posey County so that is a possible candidate for the spot.
