Katherine Dowd (alternatively, Doud) was born on 8 October 1829 in New York or Virginia or Indiana, USA (no authoritative answer on which of the three is correct, since all were listed at different times in the census records, which is all we have to go on), of unknown parents.

She married Patrick Gallagher (????-????) on 21 May 1848 in Vigo County, Indiana. They had the following child:

Thomas Gallagher (1851-1905)

She married John R. Davis (1831-After 1856). They had the following child:

Marimon Davis (1857-1928)

She married Richard Webb on 4 March 1858 in Vanderburgh County, Indiana, USA. No children are known to have born to this union.

She married William Barton (1813-1892) on 26 January 1865 in Posey County, Indiana. No children are known to have been born to this marriage.

There is some confusion about Katherine in the family trees that I have located on Ancestry. There is uncertainty about her maiden name and her first two husbands, as well as the Barton she married, some people believe it was a Samuel Barton but the Posey County marriage records indicate William B. Barton. I believe the chronology I have constructed here is the most accurate one available.

I have been unable to clearly locate Katherine in the census records before her marriage to Richard Webb. Her son Tom Gallagher listed his birthplace as Indiana in the 1900 census, which implies that she was in Indiana well before her second marriage.

At the time of the 1860 census Katherine and her son Marimon Davis (but not Tom) show up in Marrs Township in Posey County, Indiana. I suspect this is Katherine's family, and that the Mary Downs (Dowd?) listed here as 55 years old and born in Pennsylvania is Katherine's mother. Katherine's son Marimon is listed under the name of her most recent husband, Richard Webb, but there is no trace of Richard. (census image here)

I have not been able to ascertain what happened to Katherine's first three husbands, or if in fact she was actually married to all of them (specifically John Davis, who I haven't been able to find much of anything on). John Davis is supposed to have lived until 1900 but I haven't found any sources to support that date, so I don't know if he died before she married Richard Webb or if they were divorced.

After Katherine's marriage to William Barton in 1865, things seem to have settled down. The 1870 census found Katherine and William living in Robinson Township in Posey County. Most of William's children had married and moved out by then but Lourania, Anson and Otis were still at home, and Job Barton was married but living at home with his wife. There is no trace of Katherine's son Tom but he would have been nineteen by then and probably out on his own; Katherine's other son Marimon is listed in the household. As of the 1880 census, William and Katherine were still in Robinson Township, but they were down to two children, Anson and Otis. Job and his wife Elizabeth had moved to Missouri, and Lourania had moved in with her brother Samuel who had married Rachel McKinnis (Lourania later married George W. Oliver). Marimon had married Harriet Moore and moved to Gallatin County, Illinois. (census image here)

William died on 15 July 1892 and was buried in Kissick/Downen Cemetery next to his second wife Nancy (I have not been able to locate where his first wife Mary Jones Barton is buried).

As of the 1900 census Katherine was still in Robinson Township, along with her son Tom Gallagher and one of William's grandsons, Angeloe Barton. (census image here)

Katherine's son Tom died in 1905 and was buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Indiana.

By the 1910 census Katherine was living in Center Township in Posey County, along with her 25 year old granddaughter Emma Davis, Emma was a daughter of Marimon and Harriet.

Katherine died on 27 July 1915 and is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery next to her son Thomas Gallagher. Some sources list her place of death as Oklahoma City, which would be credible since her son Marimon Davis lived there, but the Indiana death records for this period list her place of death as Mount Vernon, Indiana.
