Delia Barton

Delia Downen was born on 20 February 1869 in Posey County, Indiana, USA, the daughter of William Downen and Rutha Maria Gwaltney Downen.

She married Otis Barton on 6 November 1890 in Posey County. They had the following child:

Ruth E. Barton (1893-1968)

Delia first showed up with her family in the 1870 census in Robinson Township, Posey County, Indiana, USA. An interesting note on perusing this census is that Delia's future husband Otis showed up with his parents in the census immediately before Delia and her family, so they must have been neighbors. A little more research also led me to realize that Delia and Otis were not just neighbors, but second cousins. (census image here) (View neighbors in HTML)

Delia's mother Rutha died in 1874 and her father William didn't remarry, so the 1880 census in Mount Vernon in Posey County found Delia and her siblings without a mother and her father without a wife. (census image here)

Delia married Otis Barton in 1890 and the two of them were found in the 1900 census in Gallatin County, Illinois, along with their daughter Ruth. In addition to the family, a young man named John Williams was living with them who was either 17 or 20 years old depending on which number you believe, it looks like he was helping Otis with the farm.(census image here)

Delia died on 23 January 1905 in Gallatin County and was buried at Old Cottonwood Cemetery.

Otis remarried the same year as Delia's death, to Georgia Ethel Matherly. The two of them and their children later moved to northwest Arkansas, where Otis and Georgia are buried.

Delia's daughter Ruth stayed in Illinois and married Harry Francis, the two of them are buried in Zion Cemetery near Elba, Illinois, not too far from Old Cottonwood Cemetery.
