Jane Barton
Jane Downen was born in Kentucky, USA, ca. 1792. She was the daughter of Job Downen (1768-1842) and Mary Elizabeth Robinson Downen (ca. 1769-1856).
She married Samuel Barton (ca. 1788-1839) on 1 June 1810 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. They had the following children:
William Bradford Barton (1813-1892)
Narcissa Barton (ca. 1816-After 1880)
James B. Barton (ca. 1817-(1855-1870))
Mary Barton (1819-1896)
Job Barton (ca. 1821-(1880-1900))
Jane does not appear by name but her husband Samuel does in the 1810 census in Christian County, Kentucky. At that time the only people in the household appear to be the newly married couple. (census image here)
By the time of the 1820 census Samuel and Jane and the family had moved to Posey County, Indiana. The census picture here is a lot more complicated, Samuel was listed by name (as per the custom of the census records of that time) but everyone else in the household was only identified by age, gender and color. The other thing that I find confusing is that the census itself lists that it was taken in Smith Township but Ancestry.com identifies it as being in Marrs Township in Posey County. It is possible there was a redrawing of the township boundaries but I have not pursued this to find out exactly what was going on. The numbers almost make sense but one of the two boys is missing, there is no way to tell if it is William or James. It is possible one of the two boys is staying with some other relatives or neighbors for some reason, but there's no way to tell from the census. But what we see in the census corresponds as it should for Samuel, Jane, Narcissa and Mary. (census image here)
Jane died around 1821, presumably in Posey County. Her burial place is unknown, as is Samuel's. Samuel married Mary McMahon between Jane's death and 1824. At least six more children were born to Samuel and Mary before he died in 1839. Jane did not live to see any of them because of her early death, but she was ultimately the grandmother to at least 23 children.
