Job Downen 1768 - 1842

Job Downen was born in 1768 in Abbeville County, South Carolina, now part of the USA but at that time part of British America. Some sources list his birthplace as Granville County, North Carolina, but this seems to be an error. In 1768 Abbeville County was apparently part of a South Carolina county that was known as Granville County and this may be what has caused confusion over Job's birthplace. However, Granville County was eliminated later on in 1768 (although it briefly came back again from 1785-1798). Here is an article that succinctly describes the history of Granville County, South Carolina.

In any event, Job was the son of Josiah Downen (1740-1802) and Mary Elizabeth Smith (1747-1835).

Job married Mary Elizabeth Robinson (1769-1856) in 1787 in Kentucky. They had the following children:

Timothy Downen (Unknown-Unknown)
Jane Downen (1792-1821)
Rebecca Downen (1794-After 1870)
Margaret Downen (1800-1844)
Martha Downen (1803-1877)
Johnson Downen (1805-1855)
Elizabeth Downen (1809-1895)
Job Downen (1809-1862)
David Robinson Downen (1813-1896)

The 1800 census for Kentucky was lost, but Job's name does show up on the tax list which has some of the information that was recorded by the census, though not all. His county of residence was listed as Christian County. (tax list image here)

Job and family were next found in 1810 in Muhlenberg County. This corresponds to other information we have; Job's daughter Jane was married to Samuel Barton in 1810 in Muhlenberg County. (census image here)

I can not be absolutely certain but I believe the 1820 census in Todd County, Kentucky, shows Job and his family. I have not found any other information to corroborate this location, though. (census image here)

By 1830 Job and family had moved to Posey County, Indiana, where they showed up in the census in Robb Township. (census image here)

Job bought property in Posey County in 1832, the following link is to the record of the transaction. (Land office record image here)

I have not been able to locate Job in the 1840 census. I am not sure if this is because his name was garbled in the census or perhaps he and his wife were living with one of their sons or daughters and Job was not listed as the head of household.

Job died on 30 October 1842 in Posey County. Mary died in 1856, also in Posey County. I do not know where either of them were buried.
