Job Downen 1809 - 1862

Job Downen was born on 10 January 1809 in Christian County, Kentucky, USA, the son of Job Downen and Mary Elizabeth Robinson (1769-1856).

Job Junior married Susannah Annis Martin (ca. 1813 - ca. 1843) on 11 October 1833 in Posey County, Indiana. They had the following children:

Johnson Downen (1835-1863)
John Martin Downen (1836-1922)
Joel Ledbetter Downen (1839-1932)

Susannah died between 1839 and 1846, some sources list her death year as around 1843 but that may be a guess. In any event, Job married Margaret Outlaw (ca. 1821 - After 1880) on 25 March 1846 in Posey County, Indiana. They had the following children:

James Downen (1847-1920)
Samuel Downen (1849-1917)
William Downen (1850-After 1920)
Lewis Downen (1854-After 1860)
Robert O. Downen (1855-1941)
Susan Downen (1858-After 1860)
Jobe Downen (1862-After 1930)

I have only been able to definitively locate Job in two censuses, the first one being the 1850 census in Posey County. He appeared there with his second wife Margaret and all the children up to Samuel (apparently William had not been born yet). (census image here)

During the 1850s Job and family moved west to Sullivan County, Missouri, where they were found in the 1860 census. In this census all of Job's children showed up with the exception of Jobe, who was born in 1862 only seven months before Job's death. (census image here)

Job died on 6 September 1862 and is buried in the Springer Cemetery in Sullivan County. Margaret lived at least another 18 years and can be found in the 1880 census, still living in Sullivan County. Margaret is very likely also buried in Springer Cemetery but there is also a possibility she died in Washington State as her son Samuel and his family moved there in 1889 and she may have accompanied them.
