William D. Duckworth 1845-1896
William Duckworth was born on 26 June 1845 in Posey County, Indiana, USA, the son of David Duckworth and Nancy Green Duckworth.
He married Margaret McKinnis (1846-1897) on 27 February 1868 in Posey County. They had the following children:
James D. Duckworth (1867-1901)
John Daniel Duckworth (1876-1912)
Mary E. Duckworth (1878-After 1900)
Rachel Duckworth (1880-After 1930)
William first showed up with his mother and stepfather William Barton in the 1850 census in Robinson Township, Posey County, Indiana, USA. (census image here)
As of the 1860 census, William was still living with his mother and stepfather in Robinson Township, Posey County, Indiana, USA. (census image here) (View neighbors in HTML)
William married Margaret McKinnis in 1868 and the two of them were found in the 1870 census in Lynn Township in Posey County, along with William's stepbrother Samuel Barton and Samuel's wife Rachel McKinnis Barton (Rachel and Margaret were sisters). (census image here)
By the time of the 1880 census, William and Margaret were living in Center Township, with all the children except for Rachel, who hadn't been born yet. (census image here)
I don't know how it happened, but it appears as if William died on 17 September 1896 and Margaret died less than a year later, on 4 August 1897, both probably in Posey County. I am not absolutely certain on his date, I have found no paper or online records to corroborate this but the year on his headstone seems to read 1896. The headstone is extremely hard to read, I would love to see a better picture of it to see if it is more legible. The date on Margaret's headstone is taken from a Posey County cemetery book which is normally pretty accurate, although once again I have found no other paper or online records to corroborate the date. In any event, both William and Margaret are buried in Mount Zion Cemetery in Center Township in Posey County.
As a side note, the three younger children of the couple (John Daniel, Mary and Rachel) seem to have continued functioning as a family unit after the death of their parents, the three of them were all living together in Robinson Township as of the 1900 census. John later married and unfortunately died in his mid thirties (as his older brother James had before him, they had a real run of bad luck in their family, to say the least); I do not know what became of Mary and Rachel but I'm hoping perusal of the Posey County marriage records will shed some light on their fate.
