Mary Jane Jones was born on 15 August 1822 in Posey County, Indiana, USA. She was the daughter of Wilson Jones (1793-1854) and Elizabeth Downen (1797-1895).
She married William Barton (1813-1892) on 19 November 1837 in Posey County. They had the following children:
Louisa Barton (ca. 1840-After 1870)
Wilson G. Barton (ca. 1841-1886)
Samuel Barton (1844-After 1920)
I have looked at the 1840 census records for William in Robinson Township of Posey County. The 1840 census is (obviously) harder to sort out because it only lists the head of household and everyone else is grouped by age and gender. William was the only male in the household and the only person over 20. It looks as if Mary Jane was the only female between 15 and 20. There is another unnamed female between 10 and 14 (perhaps a sister of William's or of Mary Jane's), and a girl under 5, who must be Louisa. (census image here)
Mary Jane died ca. 1845 in Posey County. I have not been able to locate where she is buried. I have a suspicion that she is buried in the Samuel Jones Cemetery in Marrs Township, Posey County (which is where her son Wilson is buried) but that the stone has been lost.
Mary Jane's husband William remarried in 1848 to Nancy Green Duckworth (1828-1864). Nancy and William raised all of Mary Jane's children to adulthood. Nancy died in 1864 and William remarried one more time, to Katherine Dowd Gallagher Davis Webb, and Katherine helped raise Nancy's children. William died in 1892 and is buried in the Kissick/Downen Cemetery in Posey County next to Nancy Green Duckworth Barton.
