Joseph Earl Leard 1869 - 1908

Joseph Leard was the son of Sanders Walker Leard (1833-1883) and Lydia Elizabeth Scoggin (1847-1935). He was born on 8 January 1869 in Mississippi.

He married Sarah L. Cook (1870-1934) on 4 November 1888 in Wayne County, Mississippi, USA. They had the following children:

Lela Leard (1889-After 1931)
Louis L. Leard (1892-After 1930)
Kate Leard (1893-1984)
Lula Ethel Leard (1894-1937)
Robert E. Leard (1896-After 1930)
Everett E. Leard (1898-1958)
Maggie Adelle Leard (1900-1905)

I have not been able to locate Joseph's family in the 1870 census, but I have been able to find them in the 1880 census in Wayne County, Mississippi. (census image here)

After his marriage to Sarah Cook in 1888, the married couple showed up in the 1900 census along with most of their children. The one exception was his daughter Kate, who was staying with her grandmother Lydia and uncles Leon and Samuel at the time this census was being taken. (census image here)

Joseph died on 5 February 1908 at the age of 39 in Wayne County. He is buried at the Waynesboro Cemetery in Waynesboro, Mississippi.

Sarah was still in Wayne County at the time of the next census after Joseph's death in 1910, but after her daughter Kate married Warner Gilbert, Sr., Sarah showed up in 1920 and 1930 in Union County, Mississippi. She died there in 1934 and is buried in the New Albany Cemetery in Union County.
