Kate Leard 1893 - 1984
Kate Leard Gilbert
Kate Gilbert
Kate Leard was the daughter of Joseph Earl Leard (1869-1908) and Sarah L. Cook (1870-1934). She was born on 16 July 1893 in Wayne County, Mississippi, USA.
Kate married Warner Gilbert (1883-1943) between 1910 and 1918. They had the following children:
Crystal Gilbert (1918-1996)
Esgal Mae Gilbert (1922-1923)
Warner Gilbert (1925-1945)
Lon Gilbert (1929-After 1930)
Kate first appeared in the census records with her grandmother Lydia and uncles Leon and Samuel in 1900 in Wayne County. The listing was on the same page as the rest of her family, so her grandmother must not have been living too far away from Joseph and Sarah's family. (census image here)
Kate's father died in 1908 and her older sister Lela got married between 1900 and 1910 but Kate and her mother and the rest of her surviving siblings showed up in the census in 1910 in Wayne County. (census image here)
After Kate's marriage to Warner Gilbert, she next showed up in the census in 1920 in Union County, Mississippi, along with Warner, their daughter Crystal, and Kate's mother Sarah and brother Louis. (census image here)
By 1930 their sons Warner and Lon had been born. Brother Louis had moved out but Kate's mother Sarah was still living with the family. (census image here)
Kate's mother Sarah died in 1934 and was buried in the New Albany Cemetery in Union County. Her husband Warner died in 1943, and her son Warner Jr. was killed in 1945 when the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed and sunk during WWII. I do not know what became of Kate's other son Lon, I am hoping further research will reveal his whereabouts after 1930. Kate's daughter Crystal married Hugh Lesley and lived until 1996. She is buried in New Albany at the Vista Memorial Park Cemetery.
