Rachel McKinnis was born ca. 1853 in Posey County, Indiana, USA. She was the daughter of James McKinnis (ca. 1806-1868) and Jane Elkins (ca. 1816-1853).

Rachel married Samuel Barton on 20 May 1870 in Posey County. They had the following children:

Charles Barton (1871-1937)
Leora Barton (1874-1949)
Mary Eva Barton (1876-1954)
Lourana Barton (1879-1957)
Mabel Barton (1882-1929)

If her family had showed up in the 1860 census that would be the first place to find Rachel. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find them in that census, it seems as if they fell through the cracks that year.

By the time of the 1870 census, Rachel had married Samuel Barton and the two of them were found in the 1870 census in Lynn Township in Posey County, along with Sam's stepbrother William Duckworth and his wife Margaret McKinnis Duckworth (Rachel's sister Margaret). (census image here)

At the time of the 1880 census, Rachel and Samuel were still living in Lynn Township, with all the children except for Mabel, who hadn't been born yet. Samuel's half-sister Lourania was also living with them. (census image here)

Rachel died on 20 November 1884 and is buried in the Mount Zion Cemetery in Center Township, Posey County.

I have not found any record of Samuel getting remarried. He was in the 1900 census in Posey County, along with Lourana and Mabel (the other children had all gotten married by then). Lourana married Lemuel Cox and the two of them moved to Fillmore in Ventura County, California. Samuel came along as well, because he and the grandchildren are there together for the 1920 census. Sam's half-brother Job and most of his children had already moved to Ventura County and were living there at the time.

I have found no records of Sam past 1920. I suspect he died in California and is buried there but I have no way of knowing. Two of his and Rachel's daughters are buried in Fillmore, California, I do know that much.
