Cynthia Oliver ca. 1848 - 1876

Cynthia was the daughter of Job Oliver and Elizabeth Jones, born in Posey County, Indiana, USA, ca. 1848.

She married John Alexander Ramsey on 6 September 1866 in Posey County. The following children were born to their marriage:

Mary Ellen Ramsey (1871-1951)
Etta Ramsey (1874-After 1880)

Cynthia was first listed in the 1850 census with her family in Robinson Township, Posey County, Indiana, USA (census image here) (View neighbors in HTML)

Cynthia's mother Elizabeth Jones Oliver died in 1855, but her father remarried in 1857 and Cynthia and the rest of the family along with her stepmother Elizabeth Ann Shaw can be found in the 1860 census, still in Robinson Township, Posey County. (census image here)

By 1870 the Oliver family had moved to Center Township in Posey County, where they appear in the census that year. Cynthia and John Ramsey appear on the same page as her brothers Charles and Samuel and their half-siblings. Their father and stepmother appear at the bottom of the previous census page. So John and Cynthia must not have lived very far away from her family. (census image here)

Cynthia and John had two girls, Mary Ellen who was born in 1871; and Etta, who was born around 1874. After the birth of Etta the trail for Cynthia goes cold. One of Kay Davidson's trees lists a death date for Cynthia of 1876 but she doesn't list a source. That date does correspond with the other evidence there is, since Cynthia's husband John married a second time in 1879, to Bethany Welborn Greathouse. The 1880 census in Lynn Township in Posey County shows John, Bethany, Mary Ellen and Etta. The two girls are listed simply as 'daughter', and Bethany's sons from her marriage with Benjamin Greathouse are listed as stepsons, which shows that the common practice being followed is that where relationships given are those to the head of household, which is John.

I have been unable to find Cynthia listed in any interment records for Posey County. If she did die in 1876, as seems likely, her name would not show up in the statewide compilation of death records which began in 1882.

The only other information I have on her passing comes from the History of Posey County, Indiana (Standard Publishing Company, Chicago, 1913, edited by John C. Leffel). There is a section on Cynthia's brother William which mentions their father Job and lists William's brothers and sisters. The book was published in 1913 and all it says about Cynthia was that she was now deceased. It does not confirm that she died in 1876 but that is the way I would bet.
