George Oliver 1859 - 1914

George William Oliver was the son of Job Oliver (1820-1911) and Elizabeth Ann Shaw (1829-1899). He was born on 1 April 1859 in Posey County, Indiana, USA.

He married Lourania Barton (1860-1927) on 24 November 1881 in Posey County. They had the following children:

Fannie Oliver (1882-1955)
Burel Oliver (1886-1912)
Rena Pearl Oliver (1889-1962)
Jesse Raymond Oliver (1894-1919)

George first showed up in the census records in 1860 in Robinson Township, Posey County. (census image here)

By 1870 George's family had moved to Center Township in Posey County, where they appear in the census that year. (census image here)

In 1880 the family was still in Center Township, but George was 21 years old and about to leave the nest. (census image here)

George married Lourania Barton in 1881 and the two of them were found in the 1900 census in Center Township. Between the 1880 census and 1900, all four of the couple's children (that I know of) had been born and were in the household by the latter date. Fannie's birth date is stated correctly in the census but her age is undercounted by seven or eight years for some reason. A local boy of 26 named Green Blackburn was also living with the family and listed as a servant, although something more may have been going on because later that year Fannie ended up marrying Green's younger brother Arthur. (census image here)

1910 found the family still living in Center Township, although slightly diminished in size. Fannie was gone, as I mentioned earlier, having married Arthur Chester Blackburn in 1900. Fannie may have been out of the house, but she wasn't that far awy. The census shows Fannie and Arthur and their children as the next family on the page.(census image here)

In 1912 George and Lourania's oldest son Burel died and was buried at Mount Zion Cemetery in Posey County. I don't have enough knowledge of the family to understand what happened next, but the rest of the family moved to Weld County, Colorado around the same time period. I don't know if they moved before or after Burel's death.

George himself died on 22 May 1914 and was buried in Hillside Cemetery in Fort Lupton, Colorado. Sadly, Burel and George's deaths were not the end of the bad breaks for the family. Their son Jesse served in the Army during WWI and then died in 1919, I don't know if he was still in the service when he died or not. In any event, Jesse is buried near his father.

Fortunately Fannie and Arthur had children, because I have not found any record of Burel or Jesse getting married or having any children. Likewise for Rena Pearl, I have not found any record of her ever having gotten married. Lourania died in 1927 in Weld County and is buried next to George in Hillside Cemetery. Rena Pearl apparently stayed in Weld County and died in 1962, she is buried near the rest of her family in Hillside Cemetery as well.
