Julia Mills
Julia was the daughter of Manolen (?) Powell (ca. 1833-(1862-1867)) and Mary Keeling Powell (1833-1894). She was born in October 1860 in
Posey County, Indiana.
She married Otis Mills (1857-1939) in 1879 in Posey County. They had the following child:
Jessie Fern Mills (1885-1973)
Julia first showed up in the census in 1870 in Robinson Township of Posey County. Her mother Mary married Timothy Downen in 1867 and the Downen and Powell households were combined. (census image here) (View neighbors in html)
Julia married Otis Mills in 1879 and the census the next year found them in Black Township of Posey County. (census image here)
The next time Julia and Otis showed up in the census in 1900, still in Black Township, their daughter Jessie Fern Mills showed up for the first time. One of the answers to the questions on the census indicates that Julia had another child who was not alive at the time of the census, but I don't know that child's gender, birth year or how old it was when it died. The 1910 census found the three of them in Mount Vernon, Indiana. I don't know if they actually moved or if the city limits moved out into the surrounding countryside of Black Township and engulfed their residence. In addition to the family, a (presumably) married couple named Frank and Sue Klein were boarding with them. (census image here)
Within a few months of the 1910 census, Jessie married Henry Baker in Posey County. According to the 1920 census the marriage ended in divorce, and at that point in time Jessie and her eight year old son Fred Baker were back with Julia and Otis. (census image here)
I don't know how much longer Jessie and Fred lived with Julia and Otis, but they were still there as of the 1930 census. (census image here)
Otis died in 1939 and Julia died in 1940; both of them were buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Mount Vernon. Their daughter Jessie died in 1973 and is also buried there with her second husband, Herbert Geary.
