Martin Warthen ca. 1835-After 1870

Martin Luther Warthen was born ca. 1835 in Indiana, the son of Walter G. Warthen (ca. 1800-Before 1850) and Lucy Ann Rea Warthen (ca. 1808-1874).

He married Louisa Barton on 2 April 1857 in Posey County, Indiana. They had the following children:

William B. Warthen (ca. 1858-After 1870)
Walter Samuel Warthen (1860-1935)
Martin Luther Warthen (1864-1896)
Wilson Warthen (ca. 1869-After 1870)

Martin first showed up by name with his mother and siblings in the 1850 census in Marrs Township of Posey County. (census image here)

As of the 1860 census, Martin and his wife Louisa and son William were living in Hamilton County, Illinois. (census image here)

Martin and Louisa were back in Posey County by the time of the 1870 census, this time in Lynn Township. At that point they were next-door neighbors to Louisa's brother Samuel and stepbrother William Duckworth. (census image here)

After the 1870 census Martin, Louisa and their oldest and youngest sons completely drop out of sight. There is a record of a Martin L. Warthen marrying an Elizabeth Johnson in 1877 in Vanderburgh County but I have no idea if this is the same Martin Warthen or not. In any event, he, too, cannot be found in future censuses. Their son Walter moved to White County, Illinois, where he died in 1935. Their next youngest son Martin Jr. is believed to have died in Hamilton County, Illinois, in 1896. I don't know if a common disaster befell the rest of the family or they moved out of the area, making it more difficult to find them. In any event, the trail grows cold after the 1870 census and we can only speculate on their ultimate fate.
