Adding a datafile segment to a PcHunter or Tempus database
If you are running PcHunter or Tempus Fugit (the recruiting and staffing software, not any other software that might exist with the same name) and you get an error message that the datafile or datafiles are full, you need to take the following steps to fix the problem.
First, get all other users to log out of the datafile. This operation cannot be performed with more than one user logged into the datafile.
In addition, you need to have administrative access to the datafile in order to do this. If you don't have that access, either track down your database administrator or contact me for help.
From the PcHunter or Tempus desktop, click on the Administration drawer to enter the administration screen.
Above the icon toolbar, you should see a group of pull down menu names. Find the Utilities drop down menu and click on it.
You should see a menu option underneath Utilities labelled Data File Utilities. Click on it.
The first option is Examine Datafile. Click on that option.
A rather cryptic screen should appear with a bunch of table names and statistics from the datafile. Ignore that part, and look for a new pull down menu option at the top of the window, labelled Data File. Click on that pull down menu.
The second option should say "Change Data File Size". Click on that option.
A window will appear showing your current datafile segment or segments. If there is only one segment it will be labelled Segment 1, if there are additional segments they will have consecutive numbers assigned to them.
A block size will be indicated. If the block size is listed as 524,288 blocks, that datafile segment is at its maximum size. If you are receiving the datafile(s) is/are full message, you probably need to add another datafile segment from this window.
To add a segment, click on the Add Segment button within the window.
When you click on Add Segment, a Select Directory window will appear. The directory your datafile is in will be displayed. Click the OK button to add the segment.
An additional segment will be added. For the next step, we resize the segment to the maximum size so that you will not see the full datafile error message again for what should be a good long time.
A field to the right is labelled Segment size (blocks). The inital value should be 20 for 20 blocks.
Click into the field, backspace over the existing numbers, and type the following value: 524288
Then click OK in the lower right corner of the window.
A message will appear at the bottom of the window indicating "Extending segment". Once this is done (it may take a few seconds or a minute or longer depending on the speed of your system) the view will return to the Examine Data File window..
You can click on the Data File pulldown if you want to confirm the additional segment was added, but if you received no error message in the steps above that should be unnecessary.
That's it! You should have added the additional segment.
