Daughter of William Brethour St John and Margaret Legge St John. She was adopted by her aunt Isabella Legge Durno and Isabella's husband Edwin Durno by 1880, when she was listed in the US federal census as their daughter. She attended Rockford College in Rockford, Illinois, appearing in the class of 1891. She was married to Dunston Collins in 1901 but the marriage had ended in divorce by 1910.

She grew up in Chicago and was a child prodigy on the piano, later becaming a well-known pianist, studying in Vienna with Theodor Leschetizky before returning to Chicago where she played numerous times with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. She appeared with Fritz Kreisler in Saint Louis.

She ran a music school in Chicago, among her students were Lyell Gustin, Neil Chotem, and Winnifred Evelyn Bedford. She was well enough known in the player piano era that her performances were recorded on player piano rolls, along with other Canadian artists such as Willie Eckstein and Louis Waizman. A list of some of the player piano rolls created from her performances are below:

62500 LISZT - La Campanella ("Paganini" Etude No. 3, g#)
62920 DEBUSSY - Reflets dans l'eau (Reflections/Water) (Images - Series #1-1)
63070 GRIEG - Norwegian Bridal March, Op. 19, No. 2 "From Folk Life"
63210 CHOPIN - Fantasie-Impromptu, Op. 66, c#
63360 LESCHETIZKY - Souvenirs d'Italie (Remembrances of Italy) Op. 39, No. 5

Frank La Forge dedicated a piece to her called "Romanze" which was published by G. Schirmer in 1911.

Her influence lives on with contemporary musicians such as Boyd McDonald. Although she spent most of her life in the U.S., her work with other Canadian musicians such as Gustin and Chotem left its mark on her native country.

She is inurned with her sister Blanche Baker and Blanche's daughter Marguerite Williams. As of 2015 only Marguerite's name was listed on the marker, although Forest Lawn records indicate all three of them are inurned in the same niche.
