Jeanne was never actually Alan Hale's daughter or legal stepdaughter but I have listed their relationship as such rather than trying to define some new relationship which may only be used once.

Jeanne came to the U.S. in 1921 and became a silent film actress known as Jean Dumas. In 1930 she was living with the Hale family in Beverly Hills, California, she was listed as a lodger, and her name was listed as her birth name, Jeanne Gontard.

Her U.S. naturalization paperwork issued on 10 November 1939 lists her as Jeanne Louise Gontard. Another document has a date of 17 February 1933 (presumably the date her file was opened) and a petition date of 1 August 1939.

However, when the 1940 census was taken she is listed as Jeanne Hale and her relationship to Alan Hale Sr. is listed as stepdaughter. From then on all the records I have found for her refer to her as Jeanne Gontard Hale or Jeanne G. Hale. The social security death master file refers to her as Jeanne Hale, as does the California Death Index. I checked the CADI to see if there was also a listing for her under Gontard but I couldn't find one.

Supposedly she was also an heir to Alan Hale's estate and was given $10,000 upon his death, which in 1950 was a not inconsiderable sum of money.

In addition, there is a interesting bit of post-mortem information. Jeanne is buried between Alan Hale and his wife Greta (who is buried next to her mother Agnes Ahrbin, Alan's mother-in-law. I would think that the space might have originally been intended for Alan Jr. (the Skipper from Gilligan's Island) or his sister Karen Hale Wookey, but since Jeanne died before the two of them (Alan Jr. died in 1990 and Karen in 1998) perhaps the decision was made to inter Jeanne there instead.

In any event, whatever Jeanne's relationship "technically" was with the family, apparently she was considered family and treated like family. So I don't think it's out of line to link her to them as a step-relative.
