This gal did some very creative things with both her birth date and her names so it took some hunting to connect all the dots on her.

She began life as Jessie Cloyce Newburn. By age 12 she had started dropping her first name Jessie and it comes and goes thereafter but is last seen in 1932 upon her marriage to Harry Homer Erpelding.

By 1940 she had not only dropped her first name in favor of her middle name (this time for good) but she had changed her married name from her husband's surname (Erpelding) to his middle name (Homer). In addition she sent him to an untimely end since she listed herself as a widow rather than divorced, a bit of a fib since Harry Homer Erpelding didn't die until 1969.

In 1949 she married Lawrence David Reese, at which point her name matched what she used in the 1940 census, "Cloyce Homer".

After this it's a bit murkier. I suspect she didn't stay married to Lawrence Reese either, but I haven't found a divorce record for them. By the time Cloyce died in 1982, she had also picked up another surname, "Johnson", which shows up as an alternate in the California Death Index as well as on her grave marker. I have no idea who "Mr. Johnson" was but it seems likely she was married again.

However, there is still an entry for her in the CADI as "Cloyce R Reese" and the social security death master file also lists her as "Cloyce Reese" but with no middle initial. I have no idea what the initial "R" is supposed to stand for, the only thing that makes sense to me is if it stood for Reese for the CADI entry where she is listed as "Cloyce R Johnson".

Other than sorting out her names, Cloyce had another interesting habit. As she aged, she didn't age chronologically as most people do. She shows up in the 1900 census so she was definitely born before 1900. That census lists her as two years old, but her family search record listed a birthdate of 2 May 1897. At best that is her birthdate, at worst it is a year too early, but I suspect it's correct. By 1910 her birthyear had slipped to 1899, and by 1930 it had slipped to 1905. By the time she died in 1982, both the CADI and SS DMF listed her birth year as 1906, which is obviously wrong. In addition they have different dates, I have gone with the day of the month and the month from social security, figuring those are more likely to be correct than the date from the CADI. I don't know how she got the social security administration to think she was born in 1906 rather than 1897 or 1898, but she did.

Lest someone think there is a case of mistaken identity with the names and dates going all over the place here, the fact that Cloyce is buried right next to her older sister Mae Newburn Anderson should put that theory to rest.

Normally with having 3 different sets of records list her birth year as 1906 it would be a done deal, but that 1900 census record trumps the later records. BTW, I double checked the 1910 census to make sure there wasn't another younger daughter who might have gotten mixed up with Cloyce, and there isn't one. So she was definitely born in 1897 or 1898.

Anyway, that's all for now. The only remaining mystery is "who was Mr. Johnson"? I am sure that too will eventually come to light, but perhaps not any time soon.
