I stumbled across Mabel because I was looking at a glitch on her daughter's record on the Forest Lawn memorial parks website. I cleared that up pretty quickly, but then I ended up going down a bit of a rabbit hole. It's not often that I see someone who was relatively famous who has so much garbled information out there on the internet.

BTW, for those who are interested, Mabel was a theatrical actress. I'm not really up on the theater of that period (or, quite frankly, of any period) but the pop culture historian in me will note that she is the mother of Doris Rankin, who married Lionel Barrymore, a great uncle of the American actress Drew Barrymore.

I figured out fairly quickly that Mabel had two different records on Find A Grave. One of them has more or less correct information on her, although I did later determine that the death date was slightly off. As it turned out, at least that memorial was in the correct cemetery.

The second memorial is garbled in several ways. It has her in a different cemetery, but more importantly, in the wrong cemetery. The birth information is correct and this memorial has more links to people she was involved with (as well as a really nice bio section, at least the part of it which is accurate). Unfortunately, the death date is for a completely different person with the same name, in fact the death date is for one of her daughters who had the same name she had, which probably explains some of the confusion.

I did find a few other misstatements on different sets of records. Family Search, Wikitree, and the otherwise good memorial on Find A Grave all had her death date slightly off, which is no big deal. However, Family Search and Wikitree both had her death as taking place in Los Angeles. That certainly would have been plausible as she was living in Beverly Hills in 1930, the year before she died. However it wasn't true. I went through the California Death Index backwards and forwards with no luck. I eventually opened up my search criteria on Family Search and then I found her death certificate from Queens, New York. The date the other sources had been giving as her death date was actually the date she was cremated in Queens. I assume her urn was held by the family, but a little over a year later she ended up in Forest Lawn in Glendale, California.

Anyway, getting back to the badly garbled Find A Grave memorial, getting the death date so far off would be bad enough, but some uncritical person on Wikipedia used the memorial with the grossly incorrect information and incorporated that into her Wikipedia article, so that not only has her death date completely wrong but also has her in the wrong cemetery.

I'm going to do what I can to get Find A Grave straightened out. There was a time when I wouldn't have bothered, but I have taken an interest in the site again after walking away (or being driven away) by the site administration for several years.

As for Wikipedia, that ain't my problem. I do look things up on the site which are more likely to be more or less accurate, but anything questionable I take with at least one grain of salt (and in some cases with vast quantities of grains of salt).

That's all I have to report on Mabel for the meantime. I may update this page if I get more information or have anything to report on getting some of the online misinformation about her cleaned up.
