His marker says 1st Ranger Battalion -- they were wiped out at the Battle of Cisterna in 1944 but apparently Robert died or was killed before that, I have no idea where or how. There is more information on his FAG memorial but it doesn't list any sources so I have no idea how accurate the information is. I did find the following in US government records but it didn't list a date: "Army S/N 39554810 - DOW (Died of wounds)"
