There were two different William Reeses from Minnesota incarcerated at Andersonville in 1864, this one and another William Reese. Both were members of the 9th Minnesota Infantry Regiment, this one was in Company H and the other one was in Company E.

I had originally thought this William Reese was the one who was buried in Andersonville, but some more information came to light and it became clear that he was moved to the Florence Stockade in South Carolina, while the other William Reese is the one who died and is buried at Andersonville.

The presumption is that this William Reese died at Florence, as he "checked in" but did not "check out". He had a wife and daughter waiting for him in Minnesota. It is not definite that he died in 1864; he could have died in January or February 1865 as the camp there was still operational until the camp management saw the handwriting on the wall and paroled or released the remaining prisoners.

If he died at Florence and is buried there, as I believe, his body lies with another 2,700 Union POWs who were buried in mass graves there. The bodies of only five of the POWs were later identified, meaning that most of the POW war dead at the Florence National Cemetery are without individual markers. There are 16 mass grave trenches which have markers at each side, so there are 32 markers for the thousands of unidentified dead.
