Wikipedia article on George Kenney.

If Wikipedia is to be believed, for some reason he had a lower rank in the USAAF (Major General) then he had in the US Army (Lieutenant General). I have tried researching this without making any headway. For now I've left the military service as is, since it is possible this really was the way it was. Or, it may be a mistake on Wikipedia.

Kenney headed the Fifth Air Force during WWII and later the Far East Air Forces. After WWII he became the first head of SAC, before being replaced by Curtis LeMay. Headed the Air University from 1948 until his retirement from the Air Force in 1951.

Personal Life

He was born in Nova Scotia while his parents were summering there (his mother's family was from that area and the weather was reportedly more pleasant than Boston's that time of year). The family's usual residence was in Brookline, Massachusetts, a suburb of Boston. Oddly enough, he is listed in both the Nova Scotia and the Massachusetts birth records, although the Massachusetts records erroneously state he was born in Brookline, not in Canada.

His first two wives are well documented, though I haven't found out when he divorced Alice Maxcy Kenney. His last two wives I know very little about, although I have made a few notes on their records.

There is some confusion over Kenney's actual burial place. Because there is a marker for him in Arlington, some people have erroneously assumed he was buried there. Thanks to Bernard Johnson we now know this is not the case, and that he is actually buried in Miami. This ties out with obituaries I found from 1977 that showed his funeral and burial were either in Miami or "South Miami".

There is a marker for him at Arlington (where his third wife Sarah is buried) and his Find A Grave memorial was previously attached to Arlington (it has now been stupidly merged with the memorial just created in Miami, proving that even the Find A Grave administrators often can't be bothered to follow their own rules on cenotaph memorials), but I don't see any dates for him on the marker, and his name is absent from the Arlington grave locator website (although his third wife's name is listed). There are websites affiliated with Arlington that say he is buried there, but no photographs showing his dates. My suspicion is that it was believed that he would be buried at Arlington, but for some reason he was not.

There is a Wikiwand page for him where there is speculation that his fourth wife did not want him buried with his third wife so she nixed the burial at Arlington. As of now it's pretty clear that the marker at Arlington is a cenotaph for him. Since I've seen this kind of thing literally hundreds of times, it would not be a surprise if that was what happened. Kenney would be the most prominent person that I know with one of these "accidental cenotaphs", if this is in fact the case.

In addition to his third wife, his son and his daughter are also buried at Arlington. So it seems very likely that the plan was for him to be buried there but his fourth wife Jeannette apparently had other ideas.

Kenney shares some pretty distinguished company in his burial location at Woodlawn/Caballero. He is interred just above Desi Arnaz's father Desiderio (and Desiderio's second wife, who is not Desi's mother) and two spaces up from a former president of Cuba (Gerardo Machado y Morales), and his wife.
