He went by his father's original name, Gleistein, up through the 1930 census. Subsequently he and the rest of his family changed their surname to Gilbert to match his sister Florence's stage name.

His social security application which was filed in December 1936 lists his name as Edward Henry Gilbert and his father's name as George E. Gleistein. I haven't found him in the 1940 census (nor a WWII draft registration) but he does show up in the social security death index under the surname Gilbert.
