Co-pilot of the B-24H Liberator "Little Joe" shot down by fighters over Germany on 8 April 1944.

McKee was initially listed as MIA along with the rest of the crew but in November or December 1945 (probably after they got a chance to examine German records of the shootdown) the Army changed his status to KIA and informed his family.

The Army MACR number is 3926, aircraft serial number is 42-52185

Just to be clear, the marker for Robert in the Netherlands is a cenotaph. I know we have brought back a few scraps of bone from places in Southeast Asia since the Vietnam War and buried those remains with great fanfare, but for the most part during and just after WWII, if there wasn't enough left of someone to fill a thimble (which frequently happened when they were in a 4 engine bomber with or without bombs that hit the ground) those formalities were dispensed with.

McKee and his family are a bit of a cypher. He entered the service from Oregon and his death notice in 1945 was published in a Portland newspaper, but he was supposedly born in Kansas City, Missouri. He had a brother named Jack who was probably 2 or 3 years younger than he was. He had a sister who married James Kirkland of Portland, I think I've found him but they weren't married yet in 1940 so she doesn't show up in his family with her future husband James. All the references to Robert's parents just list them as Mr. and Mrs. E. S. McKee. And so far I am drawing a blank on finding any of them in the census.

I created a family search dot org record for Robert and went ahead and put his birth year as 1922. It's a guess, but it's an educated guess.

Here are links to the different sources I've found. If I find out more about Robert I'll update this page and his record.

Old Buck Shots page on Flicker with information on and a photo of "Little Joe"

USAAFData page showing search results for McKee (this also shows his birthplace as Missouri

There are two pages for him on the AAMIB site. The first page has a reference to the plane he was shot down in without being explicitly linked to it, and it has the wrong nickname for the plane (Son Of A Beach instead of Little Joe). The second one has him linked to the record for the correct plane but doesn't show the nickname for the plane (Little Joe). It looks like the second page for him originally had his name as Kee rather than McKee (probably why he is duplicated on their site). I haven't figured out a way to merge the two records and some of the contact functionality on the site is broken so I'm not worrying about it for now.

American Air Museum in Britain page on Robert McKee (this specifically shows his birthplace as Kansas City, Missouri)

Second page for him on the AAMIB site, also shows his birthplace as KC

Death notice from The Oregonian, Sunday, 2 December 1945, page 18, column 4, bottom part of page (Genealogy Bank, subscription required or access from an LDS family history center).
