There is a third find a grave memorial (for a cenotaph) for Colonel Shaw, it is memorial 22519107

Apparently the people who put Colonel Shaw into Find A Grave were unaware that the mass graves the common soldiers (and Colonel Shaw) were placed into on Morris Island during the fighting in July 1863 were disinterred and the remains moved to Beaufort National Cemetery either late in the Civil War or shortly thereafter. It is true that the original burial site on Morris Island has probably been washed away due to ocean erosion, but all the remains that could be found were supposedly sent to Beaufort and reinterred there.

It is not "technically" true that Shaw has no marker at Beaufort. The problem is that he is one of over 3900 people buried there whose identity is not known. If one could visit all of those graves it would be certain that his grave would be among them, but which particular one is, as they say, "known only to God." These burials have numbers on the markers which indicate the grave space, but no names.

Beaufort Cemetery has over 3900 unknowns listed in their grave locator database, presumably the soldiers from the 54th Massachusetts are among those listings. Since I have found a large number of these listings in Section 57 I have gone ahead and listed Colonel Shaw as being there. I haven't gone through all the listings and seen if there are any "unknowns" in any other section of Beaufort Cemetery.

There are several cenotaphs for Colonel Shaw elsewhere. I have seen the monument to the 54th Massachusetts on the Boston Common in Boston, Massachusetts, and was awed by it. I understand this monument was recently vandalized (summer 2020) by people who are too ignorant and stupid to understand what the monument represents. It is a sad day in the history of the United States when the memory of people who fought and died for the cause of black freedom is allowed to be desecrated by people who claim they are protesting for the cause of "black rights".
