Per his death certificate, son of Henry (probably Heinrich) Bartels and Margaret Osterholtz Bartels.

His death information is recorded under "Bartells" rather than Bartels. Every other source says Bartels with one L. I could not find it for the life of me under his ungarbled name, Bartels, and apparently that's why.

Because he lived in Bardsdale and died a week after the Saint Francis Dam collapse, I thought his death might have had something to do with that. Apparently not, according to the d/c he died in the hospital in Burbank due to pancreatitis, and he had been in the hospital for 27 days. So his death coming so soon after the dam collapse is just a coincidence.

His residence is listed in the Ventura County CULTURAL HERITAGE SURVEY PHASE IV SANTA CLARA VALLEY 1987 - 1988 Online copy of PDF file link (You will need to download the file to read it).

The residence is listed on page 112 as being at 1187 Ojai Street in Bardsdale and was constructed in 1917-1918. It was built by Diedrich's brother in law August Zimmerman. As of 1987 the house was still owned by Diedrich's descendants but I don't know if that is still the case.
