Per her social security application from 1943, the daughter of Enos Broil and Victoria Walker.

Married first to Willie Griffin, in 1940 in Orleans Parish in Louisiana. The marriage record lists her mother's surname as Nelson rather than Walker.

I'm going to leave her mother's surname on the record blank until I figure out which of the two is correct, Walker or Nelson.

At the time of her death she was married to Spencer Jackson, who survived.

The lower numbered (famous) find a grave memorial for her is in the wrong cemetery. The higher numbered (nonfamous) memorial is in what appears to be the correct cemetery, per cemetery records, although none of the obituaries I have found list her burial place.

The Wikipedia article on Griffin is pretty good, and has some information I didn't know. They think her mother's maiden name was Walker. The article says her mother died when she was 5 and she went to live with Lucy Narcisse, her mother's cousin. The only error I've found in the Wikipedia article is that they copied the wrong burial location from Find A Grave. I'm not going to try and fix anything on the Wikipedia article either, it's been years since I did anything on the site. The admins can be just as bad as find a grave but there are a lot more of them. The other problem with Wikipedia is the site has become overtly political and now openly takes sides on partisan issues and censors information that is not politically popular, although I'm not sure they will actually admit it.

Miss Bessie Griffin, 67
Bessie Griffin; Noted Gospel Singer

Los Angeles Times (CA) - Saturday, April 15, 1989

Bessie Griffin, 67, a contralto whose gospel singing style was likened to that of Mahalia Jackson and Bessie Smith. A native of New Orleans, Miss Griffin appeared there with the Southern Harps, a group that once included Linda Hopkins. She later joined the Caravans in Chicago before founding the Gospel Pearls in Los Angeles in the 1950s. The latter group was among the first to move outside churches and into nightclubs and musical festivals. They also were seen on television on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "Hootenanny" while recording for several labels. Most recently Miss Griffin had appeared as a solo singer in Los Angeles churches.

In Culver City on Monday of cancer.

Miss Bessie Griffin, 67

Chicago Tribune (IL) - April 12, 1989

Bessie Griffin, a gospel singer who once performed with a Chicago group, died of cancer on Monday at Brockton Memorial Center in Culver City, Calif. She was 67.
Miss Griffin was born in New Orleans, and grew up singing in church. She developed a powerful contralto style that was compared to that of Mahalia Jackson and Bessie Smith.
In New Orleans, Miss Griffin worked with the Southern Harps, a group that also included Linda Hopkins. She joined the Caravans, a leading Chicago gospel group, in 1953, and she founded the Gospel Pearls in Los Angeles in the late 1950s. That group was one of the first to perform in the secular world of nightclubs and television, appearing frequently in the early 1960s on programs like the ''Ed Sullivan Show.''

In recent years, Miss Griffin toured as a soloist, singing at jazz festivals as well as churches.

Miss Griffin is survived by her husband, Spencer Jackson
