First Army nurse to die during WWII while on active duty. She was aboard a medical evacuation flight when the aircraft crashed near Naknek, Alaska.

Part of the former Chicago Beach Hotel was turned into a hospital in 1942 and renamed Gardiner General Hospital after Lieutenant Gardiner in 1943. After the war the building was turned into the 5th Army Headquarters. After 5th Army HQ moved to Fort Sheridan in 1963, the building was vacant until its demoliton in 1970.
